Student Policies
Audit policy
Lactation Education Resources (LER) is committed to ensuring the highest possible standard of lactation education for its students. Nearly all of our educational courses (with the exception of some LER Live and other offerings) offer nursing, physician, and/or lactation consultant credits.
To make these credits available to our students, LER maintains accreditation with a number of organizations, including the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) and Interstate Postgraduate Medical Association (IPMA). To maintain our accreditation with these organizations, LER conducts occasional audits of coursework. These audits include a review of course requirements as compared to completed work. (For example, the audit may compare minutes completed as compared to minutes required for a course.)
If your coursework is audited, you will receive an email with details on any additional steps you need to complete in order to receive your credits.
Marketing policy
LER is sensitive to ensuring that those who receive breastfeeding support and lactation care have an accurate understanding of the education level, certification, and or credential of their lactation care provider.
In keeping with that goal, LER has created a policy about when and where those enrolled in our courses can describe themselves as a “student Certified Breastfeeding Specialist” or “LER student.”
Currently enrolled individuals are welcome to identify themselves as “LER students” for the purpose of connecting with other students and enhancing their learning experience.
The terms “LER student” or “CBS student” (or similar phraseology) may not be used in the marketing or provision of lactation care. The CBS is reserved for those who have fully completed their coursework, received a passing score on the CBS exam, and hold a current, unexpired CBS certification. Unless renewed, the CBS certification expires five years after the day the student certifies.
While LER offers courses that prepare students for the IBCLC exam, LER does not confer the IBCLC. The IBCLC is conferred by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
While LER may, in keeping with LEARRC and other accrediting bodies, provide certificates of completion for a variety of courses, LER only confers certification for the Certified Breastfeeding Specialist (CBS). The completion of one or more LER classes does not confer a certification or any other endorsement by LER. While an individual may share that they have completed an LER class, they may not market themselves as "certified," "holding a certificate," or similar language.
