From Birth to Breast: The Effects of Labor Medications on Lactation

Email
The Effect on Lactation and Strategies for Support
Price: $24.00 USD

If you work with patients during labor and delivery, you’re already familiar with the widespread use of pain medications—83% of birthing parents in the United States receive some form of pain relief during labor. But did you know that these medications can also create significant challenges for breastfeeding initiation and success?

After completing this course, you’ll have a deep understanding of how specific medications used during labor, delivery, and the postpartum period impact lactation. More importantly, you’ll be equipped with practical strategies to help parents navigate these challenges and mitigate potential risks to breastfeeding.

In this course, you’ll examine the effects of commonly used medications, including:

  • Pain management – Epidurals, opioids (e.g., fentanyl, morphine, hydromorphone, nalbuphine, Demerol, Stadol), nitrous oxide, general anesthesia
  • Labor induction and augmentation – Pitocin, prostaglandins
  • Postpartum care – Antibiotics, magnesium sulfate, hormonal contraception

The course concludes with real-world case studies, where you’ll apply your knowledge to develop strategies for overcoming breastfeeding challenges and supporting informed decision-making during care.
